Thinking positive thoughts for the planet—a happy choice is a local choice, and that’s the direction I’m going in. Hope you’ll come along!

A mix of cherry tomatoes, Italian eggplant, shishito peppers, carrots, "dealer's choice" cucumbers, gourmet potato mix, sweet Italian bullnose peppers, and last but not least—squash and zucchini from Watsonia Farms.

A bit of Twenty Bag history.

When Harleston Towles and partner Rita Bachman combined their mutual interests to form Rooting Down Farms, they also created a unique hybrid of the community supported agriculture (CSA) model. Their system offers flexibility to us folks in pricing and level of commitment—delivering fresh, organic product on a weekly and as-needed basis.

I discovered The Twenty Bag right before the pandemic hit, and was elated to have access to locally sourced vegetables, at a pace I could consume them, and for a great price! All this, and fewer trips to the supermarket, to boot. It’s been a year since I committed my blog to raising awareness of Rooting Down Farms’ endeavor, and I’m so glad I did. They, and our entire regional farm community, bring so much to the table and deserve our support.

If you’re not already a member, you owe it to yourself to check out how The Twenty Bag works!

This last Bag of the month is loaded with summertime bounty. (Where did July go?)

A Twenty Bag newbie, the gorgeous Italian bullnose peppers look like great candidates for stuffing. I found an easy recipe in my locally-farmed-veggie bible, Local Flavors by Deborah Madison that stuffs smoky roasted chiles into a taco.

And just in case you struggle, like me, to keep tabs on all the nuances of all the chiles in the pepper universe, I offer a nifty rundown from myrecipes to get you started on a path to pepper know-how.

Search sweetgrass + grits to find plenty more ideas for the rest of the week’s haul—all curated specifically for your Twenty Bag needs.

Storage tips from Harleston: Peppers, cukes, carrots, squash, and eggplant in a plastic bag in the fridge. Tomatoes on the counter if you will use them within a day or so, in the fridge if it will take you a few days. Potatoes in a cool dark place, pantry or corner of counter.
