Twenty Bag | Aug 5

There’s nothing like a peach to give you that warm, summery vibe, and this first week of August Twenty Bag delivers the sweet fruit directly from the Shuler’s farm in Holly Hill! Carolina Gold rice middlins from Marsh Hen Mill are also a welcome sight, along with bell peppers, Anaheim chiles, a Sea Island sweet onion, gourmet German gold potatoes, Japanese eggplant and herbaceous chives.

Peaches are wonderful in pies and pastries, and in a frosty dessert I first experienced as a child abroad—peach Melba! I found a stovetop recipe created by the legendary chef, Escoffier, that’s easy and really showcases the fruit without a lot of work.

The Carolina Gold rice middlins cook up as a creamier version of standard, long grain rice that’s especially good paired with sauce forward dishes. Dishes like (now I’m dating myself) turkey a la king—extremely popular in the 1960’s—that always caused excitement among us kids.

Italian sausage and peppers is my go-to dish when there are peppers in the house. Basically just three ingredients, it gets high marks for ease of preparation and eater satisfaction. I normally use just green bell peppers, but since they’re sweet, go ahead and toss in the Anaheim chiles as well!

A quick search of my site will bring up recipes for the potatoes, eggplant, chives, and more. And check out this nifty how-to on storing your vegetables that adds to all of Harleston’s great handling tips!
